Shaun MacDonald joined Latics for an undisclosed fee on Saturday 13 August 2016 from AFC Bournemouth, before making his first appearance for the club as a second half substitute in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham City at the DW Stadium on Tuesday 16 August.

The 28-year-old Swansea-born midfielder was part of the Cherries side that progressed from League One to the Premier League.

MacDonald began his career at his native Swansea City having come through the ranks at the Liberty Stadium, making a total of 24 appearances.

He spent time on loan at Yeovil Town, making a total of 70 appearances for the Glovers before moving to Bournemouth and playing 84 times for The Cherries.

He has represented Wales at Youth, Under 21 and won 4 full caps, the last of which came in a Euro qualifier against Ukraine last March.

MacDonald has appeared at the DW Stadium for Bournemouth once before, in the Cherries’ 3-1 Sky Bet Championship win in February 2015.
