Players’ Player of the Year in his debut campaign, James Perch got off to a flying start to life at the DW Stadium after arriving from Newcastle United at the start of the 2013-14 season.
Perch began his career with his boyhood club Nottingham Forest and made over 200 appearances at the City Ground before signing for the Magpies.
A solid full-back who is equally comfortable in a more central role, Perch combined his energy and determination to be an integral part of Uwe Rosler’s play-off chasing side, making 52 appearances in all competitions during his first season.
The Mansfield-born defender scored his first Latics goal memorably in the 2-1 win at Manchester City in the FA Cup with Budweiser quarter-final before notching in the Play-Offs of the Sky Bet Championship semi-final defeat at QPR.
He continued to be a regular throughout the 2014-15 campaign, making 42 appearances in all competitions; scoring the opening goal in a 3-1 defeat at Blackburn Rovers, an equaliser the 2-2 draw at Wolves and the winner as Latics defeat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at the DW Stadium in April.
