After playing his youth career with Celtic the big defender went on to play 41 games for the club as the Bhoys won the Scottish League Cup and Scottish Premier League in 2001.
During his time at Celtic Park he was team mates with Shaun Maloney.
After a brief spell with Southampton, Leeds United was his next stop where he played 52 games in a 3-year spell, ending the 2005/06 season as a Championship play-off runner up.
He then moved onto Blackpool where he was part of the squad that was promoted to the Premier League under Ian Holloway, where he played alongside Nouha Dicko and Callum McManaman during their loan spells with the Seasiders.
Crainey made over 200 appearances for the Seasiders before joining Latics 28 June 2013 becoming Owen Coyle’s 2nd signing.
The full back is capped for Scotland at Under 21 and senior level.
