Alex Gilbey signed for Wigan Athletic from Colchester United in June 2016, following Latics' promotion to the Sky Bet Championship.
The midfielder made his first Latics appearance in the pre-season 0-0 draw at Chester FC, before featuring against Liverpool, Macclesfield Town, Rochdale, Oldham Athletic and in the 4-3 victory over Fleetwood Town as he assisted Luke Burke for Latics' second goal.
CAREER SO FAR
He progressed through the Academy at Colchester from the age of 12, remaining at the Essex-based club until joining Latics.
2013-14 proved to be Gilbey's breakthrough season as he made 39 appearances in total and was named Colchester's Young Player of the Year as the U's finished 16th in Sky Bet League One.
He scored his first professional goal on 25 March 2014 in a 4-2 defeat away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, a game in which Latics forward Michael Jacobs scored after just one minute for Wolves. Former Latics striker Nouha Dicko also scored in the last minute.
2014-15 was another big season for the midfielder, making 36 appearances with two more goals against Preston North End and Gosport Borough in the FA Cup.
In 2015-16 Gilbey was named vice-captain and made 42 appearances, scoring five goals. The midfielder also won the club's Player of the Year award, taking his Colchester tally up to 121 matches and eight goals. He scored a stunning long range drive against Latics in the 3-3 draw away to Colchester in March 2016.
