Latics went down to a strong Academy Spurs side in the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup at the DW Stadium on Wednesday night, but not without giving a good account of themselves against a very talented side.

Latics had the busier of the two defences in the first half but Dave Watson's side did manage to create a couple of half-chances.

However it was Spurs who opened the scoring on the 8th minute when captain Harry Kane got on the end of a through-ball on the left side of the box cutting his shot in from an acute angle to beat 'keeper Lee Nicholls at the near post.

David Mayer's long throw on 15 minutes almost found Jonathan Crane who was racing in at the far post, he was just pipped to the ball by the Spurs left-back.

Latics best chance of the half fell to the aforementioned Crane. The Spurs 'keeper punched clear a Latics corner and Crane's goalbound shot was deflected into the side netting.
The second half saw Latics control more of the game, limiting Spurs to a number of long range efforts.

Full-Back David Mayer kept Latics in the game when an Abian Seranno free-kick ricocheted off the Spurs wall leaving them two on one in attack. The Latics left-back, who was outstanding throughout, neatly cleaned up.

The closing stages saw both Adam Buxton and David Mayer struggling with cramp, the latter eventually having to pull out of the game leaving Latics with only 10 men, having made all three substitutions.

Then Roman Golobart, making his debut for Latics seemed to suffer a painful knee injury, we await the full diagnosis, Dave Watson's side finishing the game with nine men.

Latics:Nicholls, Chiocchi, Mayer, Langley, Golobart, Buxton, Crane, Breeze (Serrano), Jukes, Morris (Rugg), Boothman (Amos).
Subs:Williams, Myler.

Tottenham: Butler, Waller-Lassen, Carroll, Nicholson, Byrne, Caulker, Fredericks, Parrett, Kane, Bostock, M'Poku (Oyenuga).
Subs: Miles, McBride, Lancaster, Francis-Angol.
