Latics' good start to the season was halted away at Walsall, where a depleted side without regular goalkeeper Lee Nicholls and the captain Adam Buxton, were defeated 2-0.

Dave Watson remained up-beat in wake of the defeat saying: "A bit of a slip-up really.

"Lee (Nicholls) my goalkeeper was with the first-team so we were without out first-choice 'keeper. My captain was injured as well so we weren't at full strength in all honesty, but having said that it did provide an excellent opportunity for other lads to come in and make a name for themselves.

"On the day we didn't play that well in fairness, but I think we should have got something out of the game."
