STOKE WIN 4-3 ON PENALTIES

FA Youth Cup 102It was penalties heartbreak for Latics in a pulsating tie against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

Latics pushed Academy side Stoke all the way, and it was Wigan-born winger Matty Hampson's deflected shot in the 7th minute of injury time which deservedly took the tie to extra time after Salif Diao Jimenez put City ahead after an hour.

In a dramatic encounter, 16 year-old goalkeeper Neil Postlethwaite, who pulled off an incredible save to keep the game alive, was taken to hospital with a head injury following a nasty collision, and it was in the last seconds of the injury time that ensued that Hampson struck.

Coach David Lowe praised the whole team for their magnificent effort: "I really couldn't ask any more from them, everyone played their part and I really feel for them because they gave it everything."
