YOUTH REPORT: BLACKPOOL 3-2 LATICS
Watson's team fight back from three down but fall just short
BLACKPOOL 3
WIGAN ATHLETIC 2
Lancashire FA Pro Cup Quarter Final
Despite finding themselves 3-0 down at half-time Dave Watson's team showed fantastic spirit and determination to turn things round and so nearly find an equalising goal, but fell just short of progressing into the Semi-Finals of the Lancashire FA Cup.
Callum Morris and Tommy Amos both found the back of the net in the second-half as Latics fought to stay in the tie.
Morris' strike came after impressive work by Jordan Rugg on the right, the ball eventually popping up in front of the midfielder to head into an empty net.
Moments later Morris was in the thick of it again, keeping the ball alive inside the area before managing to squirm it through to Amos who pounced on the opportunity and fired into the bottom corner.
But despite pushing forward and putting the Blackpool defence under pressure it just wasn't to be, and the brave, bold performances of the entire team were left unrewarded.
In particular, captain Adam Buxton was an inspiration in the heart of defence. His bullish manner, physical ability and excellent reading of the game spurred his side on, and he really was the example to follow.
Overall the whole team grew into the game and their display after the break was match-winning with every man giving 100% to the cause.
However, those three goals conceded in the first-half left Latics with too big a mountain to climb, try in earnest as they did. Speaking after the game Watson was proud of his side and drew on the many positives to come from the performance:
"Going in at half-time 3-0 leaves you with an awful lot to do in the second-half, and to be honest given the chances they had it was a flattering score-line," said Watson.
"But credit to the lads they showed great character and determination to get back in the game and their devastated not to come away with a result."
Latics: Williams; Girvan, Buxton, Chiocchi, Boothman; Crane (Willis), Breeze, Morris, Serrano; Myler (Amos), Jukes (Rugg)
