The 30-year old signed a three year contract after arriving on a free transfer in June 2007.

The Dutchman started his career within the legendary Ajax youth academy and he helped them win Eredivisie in 1998, and the Dutch Cup in both 1998 and 1999. After 73 appearances, he moved to Chelsea in 1999 on a free transfer where he remained for four years making 130 Premiership appearances.

The Amsterdam born defender then moved to Birmingham for two years, where he played alongside Emile Heskey, but left as the Blues were relegated at the end of the 2005/06 season.

After a year with French club Rennes, whom he was an ever-present figure for, Melchiot has returned to the Premiership with Wigan, snubbing offers from Marseille, Paris, Roma, Lazio and Olympiakos.

Melchiot has played for the Netherlands 15 times, and can play anywhere along the back four.
