Edman also has a huge amount of international experience, being featured in the Swedish national team at Euro 2004 and 2006 FIFA World Cup. (he was part of the 2002 FIFA World Cup squad, but did not play). He has over 50 international caps.

Steve Bruce said: "Finding a left back was always going to be a transfer priority and Erik is a top international who has experience of the Premier League. He knows what this league is all about, and has all the attributes to become a big success at the club.

"He has a fantastic left foot and decent pace, is good in the air, brave and reads the game well.

"It's not often such experienced left backs of this quality become available and I'm not surprised so many other clubs have been interested in him. I'm delighted he's chosen to come to us."

Fans, particularly Spurs fans, will always remember his stunning goal from 35 yards against Liverpool on April 16, 2005, which kept all of the Liverpool fans in silence at Anfield.

He wears number 5 for the Swedish National Squad.
