The Nigerian international signed for Wigan in January 2007 after spending seven years at Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk where the "Miners club" always finished in the top two of the domestic league. Aghahowa won three Ukrainian titles whilst in the former Soviet state.

The 25-year old began his career at with a local Police team in his homeland before playing for Bendal Insurance and then Herning Fremad (now under the name of FC Midtjylland) of the Danish league. He then joined Tunisian club Esperance in 1999 where he helped them win their domestic title and to the African Champions League final, and he helped his country to the continents Cup of Nations tournament final.

Aghahowa has an impressive record with his country, scoring 14 goals in 32 appearances, and he netted 32 goals in 85 European appearances for Shakhtar.

Described as a tricky, fast, and intelligent, with an eye for goal and is a good team player, Aghahowa was excited about plying his trade in the country that gave football to the world, saying "I have dreamed of playing in England but until now, the chance hasn't come. This is the most famous league in the world, and I want to come and show the manager of Wigan and the fans what I can do."

He made an impressive debut against Portsmouth in February 2007, but will hope to see more first team action in the 2007/08 season after six league appearances.
