Teams' fight-back to earn home point pleases Gaffer
Roberto Martinez paid tribute to Steve Gohouri, after the defender's last minute strike against Hull City earned Latics a draw in the final home game of the season.
A difficult game seemed to be slipping away from the home side, but patience and a fantastic finish made sure the day finished on a high, and speaking after the game the gaffer was delighted his side got what they deserved in the end;
"Steve is a very powerful athlete, but you don't expect to see him in the opposition box and having that composure and quality to pull off an overhead kick," said Martinez.
"It was a great finish and capped a very focused performance overall from himself.
"We all know his qualities and it has been a difficult season for him personally.
"He has not played much football at all and when he came to us he needed nine or 10 weeks to be strong enough to play his natural game.
"Once he did that, he played very well against Portsmouth and Arsenal and, after a rest last week, he was very fresh and very strong again today.
"We showed many good things and I felt we were well in control when Victor scored his goal.
"We all know how talented Victor is, and he has that raw talent that enables him to score and create goals out of very little.
"If you leave Victor in a one-against-one situation, he is going to hurt you.
"He took his goal very well and he was a constant threat to them.
"But we conceded two goals far too cheaply, and that's very disappointing.
"Hull came here to be very organised and use dead-ball situations to score, and I thought we should have had a bit more know-how to prevent both goals.
"On the plus side, we were patient, we kept the ball well and I was delighted with the character we showed to get the goal so late in the game.
"That is something we have in abundance in the dressing room - character and desire to get something out of a game.
"The whole team was disrupted with the changes we made, and we had a very tough week in that respect.
"To lose four players is always a blow, but the boys who came in were ready and I think they all showed some good things.
"They probably lacked that little bit of match intensity, but that is understandable.
"However when you have the right attitude and the right approach that makes up for it."
After the game the players and coaching staff took part in a lap of honour, saluting the fans for all their support this season, a real sign of strength and togetherness in the manager's opinion;
"The biggest strength we have as a football club is that we are a very, very strong unit, and we want the fans to know how much the players want to play for Wigan Athletic.
"The players and staff wanted to show the fans at the end how much they appreciate their support, because we have had some real lows and the way we have reacted is because of the support we have received."
