GAFFER'S WEST HAM REACTION

Posted on: Sat 24 Apr 2010
Martinez pleased with performance but frustrated with result

Roberto Martinez was left frustrated after Latics' 3-2 defeat at West Ham, baffled as to how his side did not come away from Upton Park with any points.

From start to finish Wigan were the superior side, playing with confidence and composure and putting plenty of pressure on the home side's defence.

Speaking after the game the gaffer admitted that whilst the result was not ideal, he was pleased with the character and attitude shown by his team;

"Mixed feelings after the game because whereas the result was not what we were looking for we did everything from a footballing point-of-view that was needed to win," said Martinez.

"We did well to come here and be ourselves, overcoming the environment and the necessity West Ham had for three points to be the side that created the better chances.

"To do that and not come away with a result is very frustrating, because the players deserved much more than that.

"However I'm pleased that we're learning from our past experiences and to come here and play the way we did led people to believe we would come away with a lot more.

"Overall we could have done more to prevent the three goals West Ham scored, after going 1-0 up it was a crucial moment in the game when James McCarthy hit the bar and West Ham go up the other end of the pitch and equalise.

"I felt that if we had of got the second goal to take the lead it would have killed the game and given us the advantage.

"But I was very pleased with how we reacted after the second-half, we still knew what to do to get at West Ham and earn an equaliser of our own.

"Even then it took something very special to win the game, and it was a tough-blow in the end.

"We have two games left now which are very exciting for different reasons. We'll focus our attentions on the Hull game a week on Monday and look for the right result at our DW Stadium."
