GAFFER ENCOURAGED BY TEAM SPIRIT

Posted on: Thu 18 Feb 2010

Martinez confident more points will follow after Bolton performance

Speaking after his side drew 0-0 with Bolton at the DW Stadium Roberto Martinez praised the attitude and spirit of his team, who controlled the game and deserved to come away with more than just a point.

Although clear-cut chances were lacking, the composed style of play and constant threat posed by Latics pleased the gaffer who is positive about the upcoming games this season:

"Overall I was extremely proud of the attitude, the effort, the discipline and the responsibility of the players," said Martinez.

"The conditions were very difficult and it was always going to suit the away team.

"They were solid and trying to play through set-plays, and I thought we stood up to that very well.

"Charles N'Zogbia hitting the post was the break you need in games like this and I felt we deserved it.

"You could see again that every time Charles got on the ball he made something happen, and that is a key ingredient of being a good side.

"We have great competition for places all over the park, and that is why I am so pleased.

"The clean sheet was important because it would have been easy to lose concentration in those conditions with the state of the pitch and the weather.

"But we were superb at the back and the way we dealt with the set-plays was excellent.

"It was also promising to see Marcelo (Moreno) make his first start and Victor (Moses) his home debut, and they will give us a completely different dimension.

"Overall it was a very encouraging night, because we are starting to see a togetherness and a team spirit that will allow our undoubted talent to shine and help us win football matches.

"It was our game in hand and we have won another important point.

"You always want to get three points, especially when you are at home, but if we can show the same attributes we have shown tonight then I am sure the points will arrive."

The gaffer also commented on the work being done behind the scenes all season to create and build a strong squad, and hopes Titus Bramble will make a speedy recovery after coming off early in the second-half.

"We have worked for seven months now to try to end the season on a high and we aim to do that.

"Victor is an extremely talented young man and you can see how well he has adapted to life in the Premier League.

"But we have to be patient with him and give him the necessary time to adapt to his surroundings.

"It took a lot to get Titus off the pitch, and we'll assess him in the next 24 hours.

"Titus has been a special player for us since I have been here and we're keeping our fingers crossed he won't be out for any length of time."
