Early exit for Senegal after second group stage defeat

Mohamed Diame will make an early return to Wigan Athletic from the Africa Cup of Nations after Senegal's second defeat in the group stage, losing 2-1 to co-host nation Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday night in Bata.

Latics' representative at the tournament played the full 90 minutes once again, just as he did in their opening game against Zambia, but was unable to help his side reach the knock-out stages despite being one of the competition favourites before a ball was kicked.

Lying bottom of Group A, the Lions of Teranga still have one game left to play against Libya on Sunday but now know that qualification is impossible.

Senegal's hopes seemed to be still alive when Moussa Sow scored an equaliser in the 89th-minute to rule out Iban Travieso's opener, but deep into stoppage time a stunning strike from Kily broke the hearts of Diame and his team-mates.

It was Diame's seventh cap for Senegal.
