Preview
Wigan Athletic travel to the East Coast to face Hartlepool in the second round of this year's Carling Cup. Last year's run ended at this stage with a 4-1 defeat at Blackpool, but manager Roberto Martinez needs a win to boost the confidence in the side before Saturday's trip to White Hart Lane. That being said, the manager is likely to give a number of those who featured in Saturday's defeat to Chelsea an opportunity rest up and fully recover ahead of the weekend.
Hartlepool themselves are recovering from a couple weeks of turmoil following their recent change in management after Chris Turner resigned and Mick Wadsworth took over on a temporary basis.
Team News
Latics will be without left-back Maynor Figueroa who suffered a twisted ankle in Saturday's defeat to Chelsea. Gary Caldwell also remains on the sidelines after his summer hip operation. However Roberto Martinez could hand a debut to Gary's brother Steven, who joined the club yesterday after being released by Burnley following their relegation to the Championship last season.
The Managers
Hartlepool manager Mick Wadsworth is very familiar with a couple of the Latics squad and expects Latics to provide quality opposition regardless of who is selected.
"If you look at the players they have then you'll see that they are very good players, some of whom have just been away at the World Cup.
"I've worked with the boy Alcaraz during my time in Portugal and he's a very good player and had an excellent World Cup with Paraguay during the summer and is finding his feet in the Premier League.
"Boselli is another quality player who I saw a bit of in Argentina and I am sure will get better and better as he adapts to the English game.
"They've got a strong squad even among the players who haven't played so far."
Meanwhile Roberto Martinez will look to find the right balance between the ambition to progress in the competition and the need to rest certain players.
"We want to try to be competitive and we want to progress in the cup as much as we can," said Martinez,
"But at the same time there are certain individuals that need to rest and need to be ready for Saturday and that's where the squad comes into play.
"So if we we're not good enough as a squad to carry on progressing in the cup then that's something that we need to address.
"It's a great opportunity now for certain players to show what they can do as well and to make sure that they too are ready for Saturday, because there are places up for grabs because of the recent results."

The two sides have not met since the 1996/97 season when the club's played out two draws in Football League 2, and never in this competition. The last meeting was a 2-2 scoreline at Springfield Park which saw current assistant manager Graeme Jones open the scoring and Ian Kilford net the second. The manager incidentally was a 56th minute substitute for Latics that day.
The complete head to head record cannot separate the sides, each having 6 wins and there have been 10 drawn games.
