ON THIS DAY...

Latics' begin life in Football League 32-years ago today

What a journey it's been.

As Roberto Martinez's men prepare themselves to take on English Champions Chelsea this weekend, today marks the anniversary of the club's first game in the Football League 32-years-ago today away to Hereford United in the Fourth Division.

Pictured is Ian Gillibrand and John Brown leading the side out for their league bow, a game that finished with both sides sharing the points in a 0-0 draw.

What has happened since that day is spectacular and how fitting it is that the team should face the country's finest team this weekend.

Manger Roberto Martinez commented on the occasion;

"The key of our success throughout our history has always been to dream," said Martinez.

"Football is full of ups and downs, and emotions our fans know only too well. They have been special throughout our history and been a vital part of this club getting to where it is today.

"32-years ago to this very day we made our debut in the football league against Hereford, and now we're playing the champions of England in the world's finest league.

"That's down to the patience and support of our fans down the years and we'll need them again this Saturday."
