Defender handed skipper's armband

Wigan Athletic have announced that 28 year old Scotland international defender Gary Caldwell has been appointed the club's new Captain.

The former Hibernian and Celtic skipper is delighted to have been handed such a responsibility, saying;

"It's a massive honour for me to have been named Club Captain and a role I'll take great pride in.

"After my arrival in January it didn't take me long to realise how special a club this is and how much it means to the fans.

"As usual the rest of the team and I will be giving 100% every day to help push the club forwards."

In a unique move the players have also nominated a committee of players to take up the role of vice-captains.

Chris Kirkland, Mike Pollitt, Emmerson Boyce, Steve Gohouri and Antolin Alcaraz were all voted by their fellow team-mates to also represent the team, with Kirkland wearing the armband in last weekend's season opener against Blackpool.

Roberto Martinez commented on a new era for the club:

"Gary's professionalism is outstanding and will rub-off on the players around him in the dressing room," he said.
