KIRKY TIPS MAURO

Posted on: Wed 28 Jul 2010
'Keeper predicts new striker to be real threat

Chris Kirkland has predicted new-signing Mauro Boselli to be, 'a big hit' at Wigan Athletic, having been impressed with the striker's performances in pre-season;

"He'll score goals, for definite. He's also a really nice lad, speaks good English - which helps and I think he'll be a real hit at the club."

Spaeaking from Latics' Austrian training camp in Bad Bleiberg, Kirky also praised the efforts so far of the squad's youngest members Roman Golobart and Callum Morris;

"With the young lads you need to have them out here with the first-team learning new things in training and experiencing what it's like at this level.

"They'll both benefit from being out here, it's a close-knit group and they're fitting in really well with the rest of the lads.

"The week as a whole has gone by pretty quickly to be honest, there's not a lot to do at all out here, but everything we need is here on site, the food, the facilities and the staff are all top drawer."

Chris also looked ahead to the start of the new season and the likelihood of a new-look defence lining-up in-front of him against Blackpool on August 14th;

"It was disappointing to see Titus (Bramble) move on but football's like that and we've made sure we have cover for that position.

"Gary (Caldwell) looks as though he'll be out for the first few games with his injury so it'll feel a bit new at the back but we've all got to stay on our toes until the gaffer names the team that'll face Blackpool in a week or two.

"Football teams change every year, it's part and parcel of the game. The lads that the gaffer has brought in have all been quality signings and willdefinitely make the squad stronger.

"I'm glad the Blackpool game was moved to our place because I wouldn't have fancied going there on the opening day, it could have been very tricky.

"We always say that you need to get off to a good start in this league. The first 8-10 games can set you up for the rest of the season so it's important we get ourselves ready to hit the ground running."
