Latics' new-boy delighted to be teaming up with familiar faces and working with some new ones

The prospect of teaming up with former team-mate James McCarthy at Latics is one we already know excited James McArthur into his move south of the border.

But the midfielder has also spoken of the admiration he has for Assistant Manager Graeme Jones, with whom he played alongside and for at Hamilton.

"I played with Graeme at Hamilton before he became Assistant Manager there," said McArthur.

"He was a brilliant guy to have coaching the players and it was a sad day for Hamilton when he left for bigger things.

"As a player he was extremely determined and made sure he gave the opposition defence a hard time.

"He would win every 50-50 ball and give everything for the team, you can't ask for more as a team-mate.

"To link up with him again is a fantastic opportunity and I know he'll make sure I settle in well here."

Settling in and getting to know his new team-mates is the first challenge for the 22-year-old, but travelling with the team to Austria for the week has provided him with the perfect opportunity to do just that;

He said; "It's been really good and has helped me to settle in with the group.

"I've enjoyed the training, it's been tough and it might take a little bit of time for me to get my fitness up to the level the rest of the boys are at, but I'll be working hard every day to make sure I get there.

"I'm still so excited to be here and enjoying the whole experience of being a Wigan Athletic player.

"For me right now times flying because I'm enjoying every second of it."

McArthur also took the time to praise the impact his near-namesake James McCarthy has had in the Premier League, saying the Republic of Ireland international has continued to improve since they last played alongside one another;

"James have done excellently in the Premier League over the last season.

"I think he's become a better player since his Hamilton days, looks more composed on the ball and his work-rate is magnificent.

"He's done a tremendous job and I'm sure this season will be another big one for him."
