MARTINEZ'S AUSTRIAN AIMS

Gaffer explains how pre-season trip is the perfect preparation for new season

Roberto Martinez explained how the team's week-long training camp will not only do wonders for the players' pre-season fitness programme, but also act as the perfect bonding session ahead of the new season.

As well as a number of World Cup representatives joining up with the squad this week, youngsters Callum Morris and Roman Golobart are also present, and have the opportunity to experience life in the senior team, and Martinez is delighted with the way they are approaching the situation;

"When you're missing so many players after The World Cup it gives an opportunity to a number of young players to step in and experience things differently," said the gaffer.

"A number of young players came to Sweden with us and it gave them the opportunity to show us what they have to offer and we were very impressed with what we saw.

"We're going to be working very hard on that group and help them continue to develop tactically and technically.

"The senior players we have at the club will act as fantastic role models for the youngsters and so being around them will be a massive benefit.

"Obviously the World Cup has delayed schedules in many ways; we have Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas coming back for the trip after their break, Steve Gohouri has been back for some time already and Antolin Alcaraz will also be joining up with the group.

"The Austria trip as a whole will bring the whole group closer together which will give us a great step-up in time for the first league game."

The gaffer also detailed the focus of the work-load to be carried out throughout the week;

He said; "Well in Sweden we were able to do a bit of altitude training and focus mainly on intensity and getting the bodies ready for the work-load ahead.

"The facilities are excellent, we'll play a couple of games whilst we're here and also use the altitude to our advantage as well.

"We'll be doing plenty of tactical work out there with no distractions and beautiful surroundings to help us focus."
