MAYNOR'S WORLD CUP HOPES

Posted on: Tue 18 May 2010

Defender ready for South Africa challenge

Earlier in the week Hendry Thomas gave us his views on the achievements of Honduras in qualifying for this summer's World Cup in South Africa, and the tremendous qualifying campaign that saw the Central Americans finish third in their group.

Today we get Maynor Figueroa's take on the story so far for his nation, with the defender revealing that although the road to South Africa was a memorable one the tough times are ahead for Honduras, and he believes the team are up to the test;

"It was a very emotional time for us all and it was great to see the reaction of the people of Honduras when we qualified," said Figueroa.

"Because we had not reached the finals in 28 years it made the achievement all the more special, but as memorable as the qualifiers were the job isn't done yet.

"We've done well to reach this stage and now we all want to make a good account of ourselves in South Africa, we're not just there to make up the numbers.

"When you look at the group we've been drawn in we've a real glamorous and indeed difficult game against Spain, our second match.

"But in Chile and Switzerland you have two nations not only delighted to have made it here too but also very determined to qualify from the group, and we must show all the qualities we know we have to overcome all our opponents.

"We're focused, want to put on a good show and do our best to go as far as we can."
