Defender to miss start of season through hip surgery

Wigan Athletic can confirm that defender Gary Caldwell will possibly miss the start of the 2010/11 season after undergoing surgery on a hip injury last week.

Caldwell is scheduled for a second operation later in the summer on his right hip. Latics' Head of Sports Science Richard Evans says the surgery went very well and is confident both operations will rectify what has been a long-standing problem.

"I'll be working as hard as I can to get back as soon as possible for the new season," said Caldwell.

"It all depends on how quickly my body heals but the surgery went well and I'm optimistic of making a full recovery."
