Preview

There's no question that there is more riding on this game for Chelsea than there is for Wigan Athletic.  If Chelsea fail to beat Wigan, then the door opens for Man Utd to take the title on the last day.

The Latics boss Roberto Martinez has promised that his side have only ever gone into a game with the intention to win it, and Sunday will be no different.  For Wigan, they have the opportunity to complete a historic double over Carlo Ancelotti's side.  The Latics were convincing winners at the DW Stadium last September when goals from Titus Bramble, Hugo Rodallega and Paul Scharner sealed a 3-1 win.

Team News

Chelsea look set to name the same side that comfortably beat Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield last weekend.

Ricardo Carvalho, Jose Bosingwa, Michael Essien and John Mikel Obi will all be missing for the Blues.

Chris Kirkland attended the Player of the Year Dinner wearing a bandage on his right hand having had an operation on his finger, therefore Serbian International Vladimir Stojkovic is likely to continue in goal, with Mike Pollitt on the bench. Marcello Moreno will be given until the last minute to prove his fitness following the calf injury suffered at West Ham.  A boost for Wigan could be the return of Player and Players' Player of the Year Charles N'Zogbia who has been suffering from and ankle injury that required stitches.

Scott Sinclair cannot play against his parent club, meaning he has already played his last game this season for Latics.  Titus Bramble continues his long recovery from a stress fracture in his foot.

The Gaffer

Roberto Martinez says that despite Latics having only a position to play for, they'll relish the opportunity to cause an upset.

"It is a unique situation we find ourselves in by taking part in what will be the most important game of the season.

"Millions of people will be watching around the world and it is a great platform for the players to represent Wigan Athletic and show what they can do.

"Hopefully we can get the upset and spoil the party."

Stat Attack

  • A Wigan win would give them a first league double against Chelsea.
  • Wigan have failed to win their last 17 Premier League games in London, a run that began after victory at West Ham in December 2006.
  • A win for Wigan would be the Latics' 2nd double of the season, the other is over Burnley.
