Gaffer looks towards Saturday's big clash with Birmingham City

St Andrews is the destination for Latics this weekend as Roberto Martinez's men go in search of a much needed win against Birmingham City.

Speaking ahead of the game the gaffer explained that his side's first-half performance against the Blues' at the DW Stadium in December was one of the best of the season, and will need to be re-created if Latics are to get a result.

"When look back to when we played Birmingham here at the DW, our first-half performance was as good as any we've produced all season, and we have enough chances to win that game," said Martinez.

"Then in the second-half we couldn't handle their pressure, got punished from a free-kick and we were very unfortunate no to get anything from the game.

"But without a doubt Birmingham have been the surprise package this season, and rightly so.

"To go on the run they did and show that kind of consistency in the Premier League proves how outstanding a season they're having with a group of players who have been working together for a long time.

"They have a great team ethic and are tough opposition for anyone on their day."

Injury wise the gaffer only has concerns over Titus Bramble and James McCarthy who are still in contention to make the game.

He said: "Titus missed the game against Spurs last weekend, but is recovering well and we'll asses him right up to the game to see if he can feature.

"James received a knock to his ankle which swelled up after the game so will need some attention to see if he recovers in time. Apart from those two we have everyone fit and available for the game."

The gaffer went on to explain that as well as being fully aware of the challenge his side have from now until the end of the season, the team are not letting the current situation affect their approach and is confident that the points needed will be gained.

"You have to be aware of the challenge that lies ahead, and we need to make sure we reach our aim of Premier League status next season.

"To do that we need to gain a certain amount of points and I feel we have the games ahead of us to achieve them.

"You're always looking at what amount of points will help you achieve your aims, and with eight teams battling to stay away of the bottom three places it makes things very tight.

"I think the Premier League as a whole is as tight as it has been for many years.

"You've got three teams fighting for the title, four clubs challenging for the fourth spot and eight teams all looking to stay away from relegation.

"We feel that as a team the football we're playing and the performances we've been putting in have deserved more, and the fact that we haven't been able to get more out of the games we've played is the reason we are where we are.

"But we'll remain mature about it and not let the situation affect how we play and not show any anxiety. We need a win from the next game, everyone has to pull in the right direction and once we get through this situation we'll be a stronger football club and ready to go to the next level.
