Caldwell ready to use experience of Old Firm clashes to come out on top against Bolton

As Latics prepare to take on rivals Bolton this Wednesday, one man who has plenty of experience of getting results from high pressure games in Gary Caldwell.

The Scottish centre-half took part in 12 Old Firm match-ups in his time at Celtic and was victorious in six of them. With that he expects Wednesday night's clash to be a tense one, but believes the team who keeps their nerve will come out on top:

"A local derby where we are both in positions we don't want to be in. It's going to be a tense night, everyone's going to be fighting for every ball so we have to be up for it and impose ourselves on the game. If we do that I'm sure we can go on and take all three points.

"In derby games you have to remain calm. I remember Old Firm games were frantic with tackles flying in and it was always the team who could remain calm, concentrate and not get wrapped up in the occasion that came out on top. I think Wednesday night will be very similar to that, we have to remain focused on our jobs, do what we're good at and get a positive result on the night."

"The fans also play a massive part in every game. I remember at Celtic on big nights and European games with the fans behind us we managed to get some amazing results, and I think fans have to appreciate the big role they have. Their support is going to help us and our home form is going to be vital and I'm sure they'll be there for us on Wednesday night."

The defender revealed that after a week's break between games the team will go into the game fresh and ready to attack their opponents from the off, having learned their lessons from past games and with the belief that if they get ahead they can see out the game.

"Well we're bitterly disappointed not to have still been competing in the FA Cup, and although we've had a week-break between games, we would much rather have been playing at the weekend.

"But on the other hand it's given us an opportunity to rest, take stock of where we are and think about what we need to done in order to progress and start winning games. Hopefully we'll all go back into action fresh and ready because we've got a important group of fixtures coming up.

"We have to make sure the rest has given us a boost and that we can attack the game right from the off.

"Performances have definitely improved and we've sorted a few issues out that were a problem in the games against Blackburn and Everton.

"It's just a case now of having that belief when we we're ahead that we can keep the ball and go on the kill the game.

"We've got massive games right up until the end of the season, it's an old cliché but we just have to take it one game at a time. It's vital we go and get three points on Wednesday night, and then again on Sunday."
