'WE HAVE 11 CAPTAINS, NOT ONE' - TITUS

Posted on: Sun 14 Feb 2010
Skipper calls for team effort to start earning wins

After his fourth game as skipper Titus Bramble revealed that as proud a moment it is to wear the captain's armband Latics really have 11 captains on the pitch every week, and every one of them must pull together to start earning more points.

Bramble also shone light on the big task Wigan Athletic's new players have in adjusting to a new style of football and the solid partnership he's formed with Gary Caldwell.

"It's been fantastic to wear the captain's armband, but we've got 11 captains out there when we play, having the armband doesn't make anything different," said the skipper.

"We all pull together and we all have a responsibility to give our very best for Wigan Athletic.

"It takes time for the new players to come in and adjust to a new system of football, just like it did for us at the beginning of the season.

"But of the five who have come you look at Gary (Caldwell) and he's settled in quickly and been a great asset for us.

"Although we never played together whilst both at Newcastle, I think we've shown in training and during matches that we do well as a partnership. We both have a good understanding of each other's game and we work well together."

Bramble was speaking after Latics' frustrating 1-1 draw with Stoke City on Tuesday night and the skipper signalled what is needed if the team are to turn things round:

"We've got to learn how to see out games once we've taken the lead if we're going to get the results we need. We also have to stay positive and believe in ourselves if we're going to have a positive end to the season.

"We knew what Stoke were about, we knew we would come under a lot of pressure at the back but I thought we did well and stayed strong.

"It's happened a few times this season where we've taken an early lead and played some really good football to go with it.

"I think now we just need to concentrate on getting that second goal which will give us that comfort in the game and hopefully allow us to start coming away with a few more wins.

"All games between now and the end of the season are going to be massive, starting with Bolton net week, a game we have to get three points from.

"It's another game against one of those teams in and around us and that makes it all the more important to pick up points and gain an advantage in the league."
