Erik Edman contract is cancelled

Wigan Athletic have confirmed that Swedish international defender Erik Edman has now left the club, after his contract, due to expire at the end of this season, was cancelled by mutual agreement.

The 31 year-old has suffered badly with injury during a largely ill-fated return to England.

He signed from French club Rennes in January 2008, and after recovering from some niggling hamstring problems, he made his debut two months later.

After a run of four matches in the side, he tragically suffered a cruciate knee injury in the Premier League match at Blackburn, and subsequently lost his place to Maynor Figueroa.

The club wishes him all the best in his future career.
