Preview
Latics managed a narrow 1-0 over their former boss back in November, which was also the start of Sunderland's poor run of form. Since then Sunderland have failed to pick up a single Premier League win and picked up just four points along the way. Wigan have faired slightly better with three draws and the one win in the same period.
During the Premier League era, Latics have managed 5 wins out of a possible 7 against Sunderland.
Team News
Wigan look set to be without captain Mario Melchiot who suffered a neck injury against Balckburn. The game is also too early for Chris Kirkland (collarbone). Martinez is keeping his cards close to his chest on whether he will include deadline day signings Marcelo Moreno or Victor Moses.
Sunderland team news to follow.
The Manager
Ahead of the game, Roberto Martinez was quick to play down any talk of any battles between himself and Steve Bruce, saying it's all about the players.
"The game is all about the players and the importance of three points, not who is managing which side." said Martinez.
"The squad have been preparing well for the game and are eager to put things right as soon as possible.
"It was a big result last time, for both sides. Although their form hasn't been great since they have an outstanding squad with great talent after big investment in the summer.
"Playing at home they'll be full of intensity and physicality which we'll have to match from the very start. It's going to be a tough game but we ourselves feel hard done by with recent results when we've deserved better outcomes. But if you keep doing the right things you will get rewards and we need to make sure that we have the right attitude going into this game.
