CALDWELL FOCUS' ON EVERTON

Posted on: Thu 28 Jan 2010

Defender ready to crack on and get result this weekend

With two games under his belt in a Wigan Athletic shirt, and a goal to accompany them, Gary Caldwell is eager awaiting his next challenge, Saturday's home game against Everton.

It's been a busy introduction to the Barclays Premier League for the Scottish international, but speaking after Wednesday night's encounter at Ewood Park he explained how much he has been enjoying the experience:

"January can be a very uncertain time for players, managers and clubs," said Caldwell.

"Obviously I came here in the window so I am quite happy with it, but once you get towards the end of the month, it can get a bit unsettling.

"We are all looking forward to February 1, and we'll take it from there.

"I am enjoying my time with Wigan a lot. I knew Titus well from Newcastle and it's been great working with him and the rest of the lads.

"In the meantime we're disappointed with the result on Wednesday against Blackburn, but I feel we've got more than enough quality in the dressing room to kick on and get enough points to keep us in this league.

"This division is so tight, and if you can put a run together you can find yourself in the top half of the table.

"We know we are capable of doing that, and we just have to put it all together and put it right on the park.

"It's Everton on Saturday who are playing well, but our home form has been good throughout the season and we have to make sure that remains the case on the day."

Caldwell hit the back of the net at Blackburn on Wednesday, his first for Latics and a fitting way to highlight the impact he's had on the club since arriving earlier this month.

But the defender admitted that he would have happily traded the goal in for the three points any day after a disappointing defeat.

"It's disappointing to lose and I'd have taken not scoring if we could have won the game.

"It was a big night for us and we could really have moved up the table with a win.

"We were competing well without really stamping our own authority on the game in the first half.

"But a couple of sloppy goals have cost us and we'll have to look at that in the coming weeks and make sure we tighten up.

"I thought we upped the tempo in the second half and showed a lot more composure on the ball.

"We dominated the game after getting back into it and really looked like we would go on and win it.

"But to concede from a set-piece, which we knew they would be dangerous from, has proved very costly for us.

"When you go to Blackburn you know you are going to be put under pressure and a lot of balls are going to be put into your box.

"But you have to do your job and see it out, and we didn't do that.

"We know it's going to be tight between now and the end of the season and we have to put that right and start winning matches."
