Wigan Athletic head to Nottingham to face the Magpies in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup knowing that they have not beaten the side, who won the competition in 1894, in five attempts. However Latics fans will point to a more recent meeting the Carling Cup in August 2008 where Wigan won 4-0. Latics have won all the previous five meetings.
However there have been minor revolutions at both Club's, a high turnover of personnel at Latics, including the return of Roberto Martinez as Manager. At Notts County, Sven Goran Eriksson the most high profile change, the Swede arriving as Director of Football, charged with the task of taking the Magpies to the Premier League.
Team NewsTeam news is anybodys's guess these days in the FA Cup. It's about working out how serious the respective clubs take the compeition, combined with who needs games, the opposition and how important games are that follow the competition. Manager Roberto Martinez has given us the indication that it will a mixture of leaving some of the big guns in the side and including some of fringe players.
Injury wise,
Paul Scharner is expected to have recovered sufficiently to make himself available but Martinez may choose not risk the Austrian midfielder.
Mario Melchiot, who suffered a clean fracture to his nose at Wolves, may be forced to play in a protective mask, should it be the manager's call to include him.
Steve Gohouri could also be in the manager's thoughts, he played ninety minutes in the the Reserves win over Bolton in midweek.
Manager
Despites there being 61 places between the two sides in terms of the league standings, manager Roberto Martinez is expecting nothing more than a tough game.
"We all know the magic of the cup will be there on Saturday, and the home team always gets that little bit of extra momentum with the crowd behind them," said Martinez.
"As we all know they have a new project taking place there at the moment, and they have certain individuals that make them better than the level they're playing at.
"They've shown that in a one-off game like this they can beat anyone, they have a certain pattern to their play, try to play the game in the right manner and that's refreshing to see.
"I'm sure Notts County will achieve their aims very soon and we'll have to be aware of them this weekend."
