'WE CAN GET RESULT AT ANFIELD' - SCHARNER
Austrian believes that a repeat performance can get rewards on Wednesday night
Speaking after Saturday's agonising draw at the Britannia Stadium against Stoke City, Paul Scharner expressed his disappointment at not winning all three points, after dominating the game.
The Austrian admitted that the team are finding it hard to gather momentum of late, and was somewhat aggrieved not to be awarded what seemed a clear penalty in the first-half, a decision that could have changed the game altogether:
"We were disappointed not to get the win because if you look at the whole game, the penalty miss and the pressure we put on them at the end, we deserved something from it.
"We're finding it very difficult to keep a clean-sheet at the moment. Sometimes our defending is not as good as it should be and at other times we maybe don't get the decisions going our way.
"Being denied a penalty in the first-half was a clear example of this.
"I was asking myself 'what do I need to do to get free of the defender?' It's obviously very hard to get on the ball when you have a man on your back, and I thought to myself, 'we're supposed to be playing football, not rugby!'.
"You could see how tough it is to play here in the first 20 minutes of the second-half. They play a lot of long balls, and make full use of their set-pieces, which is difficult to counter. But, having said that, we shouldn't have conceded the second goal, straight after scoring ourselves, that was disappointing."
And on Maynor Figueora's goal:
"Maynor's goal was perfection; perfect vision, perfect timing and a perfect hit, fantastic."
Finally, Scharner spoke about his ever-changing on-field position, how he's happy to help out in any way and looking forward to Wednesday night's clash with Liverpool at Anfield:
"The gaffer and myself were speaking over the last week about me maybe having to fill in at the back if something were to happen, and of course I want to help the team in any way that I can.
"I try to enjoy my football as best as I can because I'm not getting any younger, I'm 30 now and I don't know how many games I've got left in me!
"Another difficult away-game on Wednesday, but if we play like we did in at Stoke, particularly in the first-half, then I think it's possible to get something from Anfield."
