ATHERS OPENS UP AGAIN
Latics legend Peter Atherton on Latics Player for Sunderland
Latics legend Peter Atherton is once again back behind the microphone tomorrow, as Latics take on Sunderland at the DW Stadium in what was already one of the biggest games of the season before the events at White Hart Lane.
"I'm looking forward to it," he says, "it's going to be a fantastic game and I'm sure it'll be a case of Roberto having to calm the boys down and keep them focused rather than having to motivate them!"
Atherton is the real local boy done good.
Having made his debut for Latics aged 17 in 1988, he went on to play 149 league games for us until enjoying a glittering Premier League career at Coventry City, Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City.He is still the club's youngest ever captain.
"It is great to still be involved with the club, even if it's in this small way. When you're from the town like me, to see the club rubbing shoulders with the biggest names in football is fantastic and I'm sure that we will grow under Roberto.
"We really need the backing of the Wigan fans tomorrow, though, it's going to be as tough a game as it gets I think!"
