Latics 'keeper disappointed not to get all three points against Fulham
It really was a battle of the 'keepers at the DW Stadium o Sunday night with both Chris Kirkland and Mark Schwarzer pulling off a series of fine saves to keep the score-line down.
Speaking after the game, Kirkland spoke of his admiration for the Australian stopper, and how disappointing it was not to come away with three points after a good performance.
"It's never easy conceding just before half-time, you come in and you're heads are a little bit down," said Kirkland.
"But we came out in the second-half did really well, dominated the game and had the majority of possession.
"Obviously Fulham went tight, after playing a game on Thursday, so we knew we had to make it hard for them. However, they've got a good, strong back-four and the goalkeeper was top-notch.
"We had a lot of the game, created some good chances, but Mark Schwarzer made save after save and had a great game.
"Mark made some fantastic saves out there, he's a seasoned professional and I think he won the club's player of the year award last season; after a performance like that you can see why.
"He's been a great signing for Fulham, I think he was a free transfer actually, and he's consistently good week in week out.
"There's plenty of positive signs out there. We've not been too bad at home over the last couple of seasons and we've made it a tough place for teams to come and get a result. We've now got to try and get back to winning ways here.
"The important thing was not to lose today, you see it so many times when a team is undone by a sucker-punch which can be hard to recover from. So, pleased to still come away with something but a bit disappointed not to get all three points."
Kirky explained how there were no complaints over the referee's decision to award Fulham a penalty, and that at the other end of the pitch it was great to see one of Latics' unsung heroes pop-up with the goods.
"I reminded Boycey that it's two goals in three now, and he's delighted with that. He really deserves it because he's one that doesn't grab the headlines but performs every week and I can't speak highly enough of him.
"It was a well worked goal we scored, and the type of thing you work on in training. It was great to see it come off for us today, but disappointing that it didn't go towards a win.
"Having said that there's no complaints about their penalty, I'm never too sure when players are flying round the penalty area, but most of the lads in the dressing room said that it was a fair decision so that's that, and that was another disappointment after conceding a penalty last week at Portsmouth.
"I wasn't too sure that it should have been a free-kick in the build-up to the penalty, but these decisions do come round and we hope it goes our way soon."
