SCHARNER DELIGHTED FOR FANS

Austrian hoping for same performances every week

We all know it's been a long wait to finally get a win over one of the 'big-four' teams, but one man who has waited longer than most is Paul Scharner.

Saturday's game was the Austrian's 20th attempt at defeating one of the big boys, and speaking after the game he explained how he was delighted for the fans to have finally got the win.

"I think I've played around 20 games against the top-four now and never got a win so I was very, very pleased with the result; first of all for the supporters and secondly for the whole team," said Scharner.

"We all worked very hard and everyone was on top of their game, so I think we deserved the win.

"It was disappointing we allowed them to get the equaliser, but five minutes later we went up the other end, won a penalty, and they had a man sent off. That was the moment that decided the game really.

"We had to wait a long time for the penalty to be taken which was a bit of a distraction, but in the end I was glad Hugo (Rodallega) stepped up and put it away.

Just for good measure Scharner popped up with his second goal of the season at the death to make it 3-1, but admitted that it had a lot to do with the hard-work of Maynor Figueroa to create the chance.

He said; "I actually apologised to Maynor after the goal because I think that even without my touch it would have gone in. He played extremely well and made an excellent move to get into the area and create the opportunity."

Scharner went on to point out how Roberto Martinez's tactics are now beginning to really show through, and hopes the team can re-create that kind of performance throughout the season, saying;

"It's always difficult when you bring in a new manager with a new philosophy, and it needs a bit of time to get working.

"In football if you go three or four games with no results people want to know why and what's going on.

"But when you're changing your way of playing to a style that means keeping more possession it doesn't click overnight.

"But you could see that things worked against Chelsea, and if we can do the same against other teams it will be a very good season."
