Preview

Wigan Athletic need the points with a trip to Arsenal and the visit of Chelsea next on the calendar, and a win would see an end to a 3-game pointless run as well as easing the pressure on Roberto Martinez's side.

West Ham have had the best of Wigan at home in past games, winning four of their last five visits.

Last season's game at the DW Stadium was a memorable affair, admittedly for the wrong reasons.  The game saw Wigan's Lee Cattermole and Carlton Cole sent off.

Let's hope that the football is talking point come 5pm on Saturday.

The Manager

Roberto Martinez expects an open game at the DW Stadium on Saturday and has a lot of admiration for the way the opposition play the game.

"I've been very impressed with West Ham and I think they now have a very successful formula on the pitch," said Martinez.

"There is a great mixture of experienced and young players at the club, and they have a very attacking and brave style of play. So the game on Saturday is going to be an open affair and exciting to watch, and I'm looking forward to see how we approach it.

"It's a home game so it's important we take responsibility early-on, and continue to build our chemistry with the fans as a new group of players. Ultimately we want to make the DW Stadium a very difficult place to come to in the Premier League. [read more]

Team News

The Wigan manager could keep faith with the side that performed so well at Goodison Park almost a fortnight ago. Olivier Kapo could make himself available after being sidelined since the pre-season trip to Austria and with Hugo Rodallega only set to arrive back in Wigan on Friday afternoon, that could well be an option for Martinez.   Martinez is also boosted by the return of Midfielder Jason Koumas, who has recovered from a muscle problem which kept him out of the the Everton game.

With James Collins, ever-present in the League for West Ham, now at Aston Villa, Gianfranco Zola should give a debut in central defence to Manuel Da Costa, signed from Fiorentina. And Zola must also decide whether to introduce new striker Alessandro Diamanti, from Livorno.
