'I THINK IT'LL BE AN OPEN GAME' SAYS GAFFER
'Team are laying the foundations to build on', says Martinez
Roberto Martinez is expecting an exciting encounter against West Ham at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference the gaffer explained that it is the little things in Latics' games that have cost them the results, but that it's only a matter of time before that aspect if the game is corrected:
"I've been very impressed with West Ham and I think they now have a very successful formula on the pitch," said Martinez.
"There is a great mixture of experience at young players at the club, and they have a very attacking and brave style of play. So the game on Saturday is going to be an open affair and exciting to watch, and I'm looking forward to see how we approach it.
"It's a home game so it's important we take responsibility early-on, and continue to build our chemistry with the fans as a new group of players. Ultimately we want to make the DW Stadium a very difficult place to come to in the Premier League.
"A lot of the players are still settling into life in the North-West and in Wigan which is very important for them and us. You have to be happy off the pitch to be happy on it, and I'm glad the players are doing well in that aspect.
"In that respect, it's important that we look past the results so far; it's not always a case that everything is right when you win, or everything is wrong when you lose. As a team we're still gelling together which is vital, the way we are progressing and growing has been very pleasing, and we know where we have to improve.
"The decision-making during a game is vital, and getting that aspect right is easier when you all know each other, and create a relationship on the pitch. That's the period we're in at the moment and I think it's been reflected in the results we've had.
"I wouldn't say it's been a reflection on the performances however; there have been many very pleasing aspects of our game so far as a new group, and we can see the foundations being laid ready for us to make the next step forward."
The gaffer will also be welcoming back a number of his international players for the game, and is happy to have received no bad news from their exploits:
He said; "One or two players have travelled but not been involved which is tough for the player to accept and it's frustrating for us, but thankfully we haven't had any news of any injuries so that's good.
"All the players are reaching good volumes of fitness and their bodies are well prepared for the demands of the season. Hopefully everyone will be in good spirits and will have the right levels to be ready to take on West Ham."
