Martinez happy with transfer dealings and focusing on West Ham

Roberto Martinez has declared himself delighted with the squad he has following the closure of the transfer window on Tuesday afternoon.

The gaffer stressed that one of the important things was that the club was able to retain a number of key players who had inevitably created interest from elsewhere.

"You always need to look to keep helping the squad that you have," said Martinez.

"I'm not the sort of person to just bring in players for the sake of it, Wigan Athletic doesn't work like that.

"In that respect I'm delighted with the squad I have here and now we need to work hard and achieve our potential as soon as we can.

"One of the most important things for us was to keep hold of our key players, those who have been attracting interest from elsewhere.

"We're delighted to have kept the squad largely the same, and will use this period to refresh the players' minds and reflect on how the season has started and focus on the West Ham game. Overall I'm glad that we can now stop all the talking and focus on being ready to fulfil our potential."

Latics' results haven't been the best of late, but the gaffer has been encouraged by the performances he's seen so far, and is confident it will only be a matter of time before things click

"If you analyse our performances so far, even the first 50 minutes against Manchester United, you can see the players are developing, and I'm delighted with that.

"To a large extent the performances are not getting the points they deserve, and that's common when you have a new group of players.

"They're still bedding together and developing that winning mentality, but hopefully it won't be long before they get the results they deserve.

"I said from the start that the first four months would be very challenging, and we're still in that period.

"There have been many positive things to come out of our performances so far, we just need to get that winning mentality and take the points we deserve. With a bit of time and with the support of everyone at the club, particularly the fans, that will come."

Rodallega: One of Latics many International Jetsetters

In the meantime a number of Latics' players will be jetting off to take part in international contests, and although Martinez wishes them the very best, he admits not being overly keen on losing them at a crucial point in the season.

He said; "The main problem with the international break is the travelling. Too often our players have to travel from one side of the World to the other, and it's not ideal.

"Coming back on a Friday to prepare for a Premier League game the next day is something I can't understand, it doesn't seem right.

"Sometimes it is good for the player to switch off and focus on something different momentarily, and hope they all come back sharp and injury-free.

"Until they return we'll use this period as best we can to focus on the areas we need to improve with the players who are staying back."
