SCHARNS HAPPY TO BACK ON SCORE-SHEET

Posted on: Wed 02 Sep 2009
'New players are still adjusting to game', says Austrian

It's fair to say that Paul Scharner enjoys playing against Everton, in the seven games he's faced the Toffees the Austrian has fired home four times, his latest coming in Sunday's defeat at Goodison Park.

The game also saw Scharner play in a more advanced position just behind the front-line, and after the game he spoke of how good it felt to back on the score-sheet.

"I like scoring against Everton, that was my fourth goal against them and I always seem to do well in this fixture," said Scharner.

"The build up to the goal was nice, good play on the wing and a good cross from Charles (N'Zogbia), and he made it easy for me to get on the end of.

"It was disappointing not to get the result but from a personal point of view I'm really happy to be back on the score-sheet.

"Unfortunately it wasn't enough, and I think we were very unlucky to have conceded in the last minute of the game. We lost possession through a throw-in not too long before the goal which was disappointing, so we need to improve upon that in the future.

"I was surprised to play in that position, but I certainly enjoyed it. I was chasing the ball a lot which meant I lost a bit of energy, and I think for the last 15-20 minutes I suffered a bit from that.

"It's hard sometimes to focus on playing in a certain position when you're used top playing elsewhere but I always try my best to help the team and give everything I have, unfortunately it was just not enough."

Scharner isn't worried about Latics' recent form, explaining that the squad are going through a transitional period, and that the new faces at the club are still adjusting to the English-style of play which inevitably takes time.

He said, "It's quite a difficult situation at the moment because when you're not picking up points you can start to get nervous about where you are.

"We have to pick ourselves up and continue to give the good performances we're capable of. As before we played well at Everton, but went away with nothing, and that needs to change as soon as possible.

"We've had a number of new players come in who haven't got experience of the Premier League, so it's going to take them time to adjust to it. But we're certainly getting there as a group and now we need to concentrate on getting back onto winning street."
