CHO-SEN LANGUAGE

Posted on: Tue 04 Aug 2009

Midfielder passing English test

It's not every day that West Aughton and South Korea come together, so when the opportunity for Latics' match commentator Graham Lovett to interview Won Hee Cho came along, it seemed too good an opportunity to miss!

And so with Carrow Road as our setting, in one corner we had Lovett, known for his rasping voice and extensive vocabulary, and in the other Cho, a player who has had an impressive pre-season, but whose command of the English language was yet to be put to the test.

But as Cho came into focus on camera and with Latics' media team fearing the worst, the midfielder surprised us all, and showed just how hard he has been working to adapt to life in England:

"One thing I've tried very hard to do over the last few months is to learn the English language, which I couldn't speak when I first came here," said Cho.

"I've still got a lot of work to do and I'm working very hard to improve it because it can be hard sometimes out on the pitch to get a message across, but I'm learning more and more each day.

"It's very important to me to learn the language so that I can continue settling into the area and become a better player who can communicate more."

Impressive stuff for a player who barely spoke a word of English back in March when he joined the club, and a sign of real commitment to the cause as he pushes himself to be ready for the upcoming season, his strike at Norwich City certainly not doing him any harm:

"For the goal I scored it was very good play from Jordi (Gomez) and Jason (Scotland) to set me up, and I was delighted when my shot went in.

"My fitness is improving all the time and I'm continuing to work hard in training to be ready for the start of the season.

"The gaffer," one of the words Cho has picked up relatively quickly, "has given me detailed instructions about when to push forward and when to hold back, which has all helped to improve my game.

"Because of that whoever is playing in the centre of the pitch understands what roles he has to do, one knows when to stay and the other knows when to go."
