Latics sign Jordi Gomez from Espanyol. Martinez: "more are on the way!"
Wigan Athletic are delighted to announce the first signature of the Roberto Martinez era, Spanish midfielder JORDI GOMEZ from Espanyol - the first Spaniard at the club since the infamous Three Amigos of 1995!
The highly coveted 24 year-old spent last season on loan with Martinez at Swansea City, where he was a major success, and was voted by his fellow professionals into the Championship PFA team of the year after scoring 12 goals in 41 league appearances for the Swans.
He was in Wigan today to pass a medical and put pen to paper on a three year deal.
Martinez revealed that several Premier League clubs, as well as clubs on the continent, have been chasing Gomez, who served his apprenticeship at his local club Barcelona before moving across the city to Espanyol.
Martinez is happy to have made his first signing.
"Jordi is a real quality player," he said, "a great left foot and extremely pleasing on the eye as a player.
"I have no doubts in my mind that he will do well in the Premier League. I think he can go all the way in the game, and to play in the Premier League is the next step in his career.
"He is a creative player with fantastic technical ability but he also knows how to look after himself on a football field. He was very popular with the supporters at Swansea and I'm sure that will be the same here.

"To be honest I was surprised we managed to get him at Swansea last season, but now that he is available, he is a player I really wanted to bring on board. He can play in several different positions and will score goals from midfield."
Martinez added: "We are a little light in numbers and I want to press ahead and bring in some more real quality into the squad. You need to have healthy competition for places and we must make sure that the players coming in are of the correct standard and mental attitude for us. Watch this space."
