'We've shown real progression this year' says Assistant

By Paul Chialton

In the last of his post-match analysis' for this season, Eric Black looked back at what has been an eventful campaign full of highs and lows that will help both the players and management staff learn and improve in the future.

Finishing in 11th spot is a great achievement for the club and Black took the time to recognise the hard-work put in by everyone at the club in helping Wigan show their true potential:

"It's great to have finished in 11th and it's been a fantastic season that has shown our progression as a club.

"It's been a pleasure working with the players in training, they all work exceptionally hard. So the highlights for me have all been on the training field. On the pitch any victory is a highlight for me and to have put in some good performances against the big clubs has been pleasing.

"There is that feeling of 'what could have been', but we're happy with our final standing and we'll use it as a platform to work on for next season.

"I think it's a psychological issue the fact that we kind of switched off once we knew we were safe. I suppose it's only human nature to react like that because we spoke at the start of the season about the necessity to stay in the Premier League, something the players achieved very quickly.

"But we'll use it as a learning curve for us, both the players and management, to use that experience and help us to keep improving in the future.

"But to put things in perspective, for a club like Wigan to have come from where we have to where we are today is a magnificent achievement. To be honest I hope it happens next year so that we have a chance to improve on this season and finish even higher."

Black also reflected on how events at the bottom of the table highlighted just how tough the Premier League is and, true to form, offered his views on the Portsmouth victory:

"We've been disappointed recently but I thought the players went out against Portsmouth and gave a really good performance for the supporters, and to be fair we could have won the game by a bigger margin.

"We want to use that performance and result to take us into next season and start things off on a high.

"There are three massive clubs who have dropped out of the league this year and that just shows how difficult the Premier League is."
