Defender wants team to fulfil their ambitions

Emmerson Boyce paid tribute to the fantastic form of Wigan this season and stated that those players coming into the squad this month will have to earn their place in the team.

With so many good performances across the pitch every week Steve Bruce has created a great formula at the club and Boyce hopes the new players will help them to achieve their potential:

"We've had a great start to the season and there's about 15 games left so we want to keep that momentum going.

"Those players who come in will have to fight for their place and realise that we're doing well at the moment, so they'll have to come in and perform to keep their place in the team.

"We want to finish as high as we can and we're ambitious as players and as a club.

"So we'll strike as high as we can but keep our feet on the ground at the same time, otherwise a couple of bad results will drop us in the danger zone."

Boyce has had a tough week coming up against the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres on Wednesday and Gabriel Agbonlahor on Saturday. But he's passed both tests with flying colours and is delighted with the way a difficult month has turned out:

"This was one of our hard months, playing the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool, so to come out of it with the points that we've accumulated is a good return.

"Villa are a top quality side who are building for the future. They've got lots of good players like Agbonlahor, and of course 'Hesk' was there today who is always a tough player to play against.

"But we came here with our own game plan and got a good result. We rode our luck at times but after the last couple of years we've had at Wigan we deserve a bit of luck."
