Kilbane hoping to take 2008 form into new year

By Paul Chialton

After the disappointment of last week's FA Cup exit Kevin Kilbane is confident that the return of several key players will provide a stern test for Tottenham at the JJB tomorrow.

Latics had an excellent end to 2009 and Kilbane is hoping to take December's league form into the new year starting with tomorrow's clash against Spurs:

"We finished last month well and we've got to try and maintain our league form.

"We picked up nine points from the Blackburn, Newcastle and Bolton games, meeting the targets we set ourselves. Now we're looking towards tomorrow's game against Spurs, whilst trying not to look too far ahead otherwise we could get caught out."

"We're out of the Cup now which is a bit disappointing, but we've got to now concentrate on our league form and carry it through until the end of the season.

"They've (Tottenham) played a game already this week and we've got to try and use that to our advantage. We've got to get at them and put pressure on them and hope the extra game they played has an effect on them.

"We hope to get Emile (Heskey) and Amr (Zaki) back in the frame this weekend as well as our skipper Mario and Chris Kirkland in goal, and to have those kinds of players back for us will be a big bonus going into the game."

January is set to be a difficult month for Latics, but Kilbane believes the team are in an excellent position at this stage of the season to fulfil the targets set at the start of the year:

"At the start of the season we set a target for staying in the Premier League and we've given ourselves a real fighting chance of doing that now.

"We've got 28 points on the board so we've just got to kick-on and see where that takes us. It's a good squad here who are playing well week in week out, and we've got to maintain that form until the end of the season.
