KOUMAS DELIGHTED WITH IMPORTANT WIN

Posted on: Sun 02 Nov 2008

Latics midfielder Jason Koumas told Latics World he was delighted with the side's vital victory at Fratton Park yesterday (Saturday)

Emile Heskey scored an injury time winner on the south cost to end a horrible run of form for the Latics and Koumas believes the win was a vital one.

"It was important to get a result today following the disappointment from Fulham on Wednesday," he said "But we thought we would get chances today and as you saw, especially in the second half, we could have scored more goals."

Latics were a goal up at half time in an end to end match and Koumas was delighted to feature.

"It was good to be out there, it's been frustrating recently but hopefully I'll get a few more minutes on the pitch to get a bit of form in."

The Welshman has usually taken up the left midfield slot when selected but at Portsmouth he was placed just behind the strikers; a position he said he enjoyed.

"I was roaming behind the front two which is a good position for me so I enjoyed it. I had a slow start but I haven't played for a while."

"I felt better second half. My job's to create chances and we had a few in the second half and could have scored more."

In an action packed second half, Koumas was a key figure in many of the Latics attacks.

"As the second half went on, we got deeper and invited them. They had their chances and so did we and luckily enough Heskey got one at the end," he explained. "We kept going even when they equalised and countered a few times. Antonio had a couple of great chances but it was a good result for us."

"We always feel we can score, obviously on the counter and we looked dangerous today."

Latics were met with horrendous winds and torrential rain when they arrived on the south coast and it didn't stop right throughout the match but Koumas believes the side battled the conditions well.

"It was tough, especially on a tight pitch. It was skidding around a little bit but I though we coped with it well and defended well. That's a good three points for us."
