Honduras left back Maynor Figueroa extends loan

The club has confirmed that Honduras international left back Maynor Figueroa has had his loan from Deportivo Olimpia extended for a further six months, with a view to a permanent deal.

The 25 year-old made a dramatic first start for the team in the final game of the season against Manchester United, and impressed, forcing Cristiano Ronaldo into one of his quieter games. He made one other appearance, as a late substitute against Birmingham City.

Following another protracted transfer, complicated by visa and work permit issues, the club can now go ahead and make the announcement

Steve Bruce said: "It has been another complicated one, we don't seem to pick easy ones at this club. But it's all been resolved satisfactorily.

"Maynor waited for his chance and did very well when it came last season. He has the potential to do well in England, he has a fantastic attitude in training and he has shown now that he is not fazed by the Premier League. I'm delighted he's with us for another few months at least, and hopefully longer."

Figueroa said: "I am very happy to stay. I want to make a career in England, which is why I have tried so hard when I am here. This is the best league in the world and I'm grateful that Wigan have given me the chance to prove myself. Now I want to repay that faith by performing for the team."

The news means that Figueroa will be avilable for selection for tonight's friendly at Oakwell.
