Latics cantered to a comprehensive victory against Austrian part-timers in their first pre-season outing, scoring three goals, having another three chalked off for offside and even missing a penalty with the last kick of the game.

Steve Bruce's men were assured throughout, playing classy one-touch football from the back and looking really sharp in attack.

Bruce said afterwards: "For a first outing this was a good performance."

One of the chief positives was the performance of young players Lewis Montrose, Tomasz Kupisz and David Cotterill, who all started.

And having also handed a starting place to Henri Camara, the Senegalese speed king offered a reminder to his manager of what he can do on a football field, looking lively and at times extremely dangerous. He scored one, made another, forced the goalkeeper into a superb save and peppered a couple of efforts wide.

He opened the scoring with his first goal in a Wigan Athletic shirt since scoring a penalty at Middlesbrough in December 2006, a delightful dink over the keeper having been put through by Montrose and beating his marker to the ball through sheer pace.

Antoine Sibierski, who completed the full 90 minutes, doubled the tally just after the hour mark, this time Camara turning provider when he pulled the ball back across the face of goal for Sibierski to power it home.

Michael Brown then scored his first ever goal in a Latics shirt, converting Emmerson's Boyce pull back from the right with 20 minutes left after a late run into the box.

Latics put the ball in the net on three other occasions through Sibierski, Kupisz and Cotterill only to be denied by a linesman's flag on each occasion, whilst Sibierski rattled a last minute penalty against the bar when Kevin Kilbane was hauled down after charging into the box.

This was the first outing for Latics' new kit, but was also the unveiling of Paul Scharner's face mask following his close season nose operation; he looks like a cross between Phantom of The Opera and Zorro, with a touch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles thrown in.

New boy Olivier Kapo was not risked as he is still recovering from a wrist operation, while fellow newcomer Daniel De Ridder was an unused substitute.

Latics next face Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday evening.

Steve Bruce said: "A great little work out but really, nobody should read too much into it because I used the game as a fitness exercise first and foremost.

"I'll change things around for the next game because the object of these matches really is to get everyone into shape and build overall match sharpness.

"Having said that, Henri took his goal very well and looked a handful. He's come back looking hungry and he's undoubtedly a talented player.

"The game came a bit too soon for Olivier Kapo but he is going to be a great addition to the squad and we'll see if he's ready on Tuesday."
