Club Confirm Erik Edman Could Be Out For Six Months

The club have reluctantly confirmed that Swedish international left back Erik Edman ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament to his left knee during last weekend's match at Blackburn, and is likely to be out for around six months.

The club have given Edman permission to travel to London today to join up with the Sweden national team doctors, who are in this country ahead of their match against Brazil at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

Edman will then return to Sweden for the operation and initial recovery. It has not been confirmed yet when he will return to Wigan.

It is a big blow for club and player because Edman has been in sensational form since breaking into the side following his January move from Rennes.

Latics manager Steve Bruce said: "It's a real shame because Eric has looked so natural, and we will certainly miss him. He's also a lovely lad and a terrific professional, but he'll get over this and be back for us, I'm sure. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best."

Steve Bruce has a number of options looking forward.

Kevin Kilbane looks favourite to step back into the left back position he has filled for most of the season, but Honduran left-back Maynor Figueroa, who has impressed at reserve level, might also come into contention. Cameroon international Salomon Olembe has also played at left full-back in his career, while Emmerson Boyce and Mario Melchiot also have experience of playing there.
