Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce has signed Honduran international left-back Maynor Figueroa, subject to international clearance.

The 24 year old joins on loan until the end of the season from Deportivo Olimpia, the same club from which Latics have just signed Wilson Palacios.

Figueroa has been on trial at the JJB Stadium for three weeks and manager Steve Bruce says he has been impressed with him: "He's strong, he's quick, he has a superb left foot and I think he has the attributes to adapt to the English game.

"He's shown his desire to be with us by being away from his family all over Christmas and has shown plenty of potential in training."

Bruce revealed that there were other clubs in the hunt for the left back, and he is naturally delighted he has picked Wigan Athletic.

"It's always a nervous time when you make a proposal to a player and you know he has a choice of clubs, but he has committed to himself to us, which is pleasing."

Figueroa, who has played 47 times for his country, has been granted a work permit to play in this country.

He said: "I have always had an ambition to play in England and now I have a chance to prove myself in what I consider to be the best league in the world. I am excited by the challenge."
