Callum McManaman scores on his return but, Latics are knocked out by cruel deflection

Report by Nick Taylor

Wigan Athletic's FA Cup with Budweiser third round tie ended in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Npower League Two side Swindon Town.

Roberto Martinez's men took the lead after Callum McManaman won a penalty and despite Ben Watson's hitting it againsty the post, McManaman put the rebound away.

Swindon hit back just before half time through a header by Alan Connell and then won the game when Matt Ritchie shot took a deflection off half time substitute Paul Benson.

Cup magic was in the air before kick off as both sets of fans were in great spirits.

Martinez made nine changes from the team that played Sunderland on Tuesday night with McManaman and development player Jordan Mustoe getting the nod and both players made a solid impact.

The game was edgy in the first exchanges with both teams failing to gain possession of the ball but, when McManaman made a clever dribble into the box he was hacked down and a spot kick was awarded.

Resident penalty taker Watson stood up but then slipped as he struck the ball to hit the post, McManaman was sharp enough to pounce on the rebound to put Latics ahead.

Changes were made to both sides throughout the second half and once again the game struggled to settle down with chances at both ends and McManaman still looking dangerous.

Shaun Maloney was the victim of some bad luck as he played a pass that was intercepted and subsequently went down injured. Whilst this was going on Ritchie picked up the ball and took a pot shot at goal, the ball took a wicked deflection off Benson and deceived Ali Al Habsi to make it 2-1.

Latics huffed and puffed, introducing Victor Moses and Conor Sammon but couldn't quite turn things around as Swindon progress to the fourth round.
